Systems Engineer

Reports To: Director of Delivery.

Workplace Type: Hybrid (in-office days are Tues-Thurs).

Location: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Our office is in North Kanata.

Employment Type: Full Time.

Salary Range: $100,000 to $135,000.

Position Overview

This is a hands-on role for an experienced IT professional who enjoys designing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting modern enterprise technology solutions. You will be responsible for the operation, security, and continuous improvement of our Windows and Linux environments, enterprise applications, Microsoft 365, cloud platforms, virtualization infrastructure, networking, end-user computing systems, and Cord3’s Data-Centric Security (DCS) platform and supporting technologies.

Working closely with our engineering and project teams, you will build and maintain development, testing, demonstration, and customer simulation environments that support product development, technical investigations, customer demonstrations, and solution deployments. This includes deploying, configuring, and supporting Cord3 Data-Centric Security components, integrating them with customer identity providers, enterprise applications, cloud platforms, and networking infrastructure, and reproducing customer environments to validate solutions and troubleshoot complex technical issues.

Responsibilities

Enterprise Systems & Cloud

  • Design, deploy, administer, and support enterprise IT systems across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud environments.
  • Administer Microsoft 365, Windows Server, Linux, enterprise identity services, messaging platforms, and related infrastructure technologies.
  • Deploy, administer, and support cloud platforms and services, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Google Distributed Cloud (GDC).
  • Deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise virtualization, collaboration, application delivery, and messaging platforms, including Proxmox Virtual Environment (PVE), Openfire, Matrix, reverse proxies, and load-balancing solutions.
  • Manage enterprise applications and SaaS platforms, ensuring security, availability, performance, licensing, and lifecycle management.
  • Monitor system performance, availability, capacity, and security, implementing backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, and cybersecurity best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex infrastructure, cloud, virtualization, and enterprise application issues while continuously improving system reliability, performance, and security.

Infrastructure & Networking

  • Design, deploy, maintain, and continuously improve enterprise computing, storage, and networking infrastructure across on-premise, hybrid, and cloud environments.
  • Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot, and refresh enterprise servers, storage systems, end-user devices, networking equipment, and associated infrastructure.
  • Plan and execute technology lifecycle initiatives, including hardware refreshes, infrastructure upgrades, cloud migrations, office relocations, and technology modernization projects.
  • Coordinate with vendors and service providers for procurement, licensing, telecommunications, warranty support, Internet services, and technical escalations.

End User Support

  • Provide Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 technical support for enterprise systems, applications, cloud services, and end-user computing.
  • Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, operating system, networking, collaboration, cloud, and enterprise application issues.
  • Deploy, configure, and support end-user devices, collaboration tools, and workplace technologies.
  • Manage user lifecycle activities, including onboarding, offboarding, account provisioning, permissions management, software deployment, and asset management.
  • Deliver responsive, professional technical support while promoting continuous improvement of the end-user computing experience.

Engineering & Client Engagement

  • Collaborate with engineering and project teams to design, build, and maintain development, testing, staging, demonstration, and customer simulation environments.
  • Deploy, configure, integrate, and support enterprise and security platforms, including Cord3 Data-Centric Security (DCS) components, identity providers, collaboration platforms, reverse proxies, application delivery controllers (load balancers), virtualization platforms, cloud services, and enterprise applications.
  • Build and maintain realistic customer environments to support product validation, integration testing, troubleshooting, proof-of-concept activities, customer demonstrations, and solution deployments.
  • Assist engineering and project teams with customer implementations, infrastructure validation, upgrades, migrations, and technical investigations.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, deployment guides, operating procedures, and solution architecture documentation.
  • Identify opportunities to automate deployments, monitoring, system administration, and operational processes.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience administering enterprise IT systems in Windows and Linux environments.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting enterprise infrastructure across on-premise, hybrid, and cloud environments.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to perform root cause analysis.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Self-motivated with excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities independently and collaboratively.

Core Technical Skills

The successful candidate should possess strong hands-on experience with most of the following technologies:

  • Windows Server and Linux administration.
  • Microsoft 365, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Exchange Online, SharePoint, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Cloud platforms, including Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Google Distributed Cloud (GDC).
  • Proxmox Virtual Environment (PVE), including clustering, storage, backup and recovery, live migration, and high availability (required).
  • Enterprise virtualization technologies such as VMware vSphere/ESXi, Microsoft Hyper-V, or other KVM-based platforms.
  • Enterprise networking, including TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, firewalls, wireless networking, DNS, and DHCP.
  • Enterprise servers, storage systems, networking equipment, desktops, laptops, and endpoint technologies.
  • Backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, monitoring, and cybersecurity solutions.
  • Automation and scripting using PowerShell, Python, Bash, Terraform, Ansible or similar technologies.
  • Building and maintaining development, testing, demonstration, or customer environments supporting engineering and solution delivery.

Preferred Experience

Experience with one or more of the following technologies is considered an asset:

  • Fortinet firewalls and security appliances.
  • Cisco or similar enterprise networking platforms.
  • Enterprise backup solutions (Veeam or equivalent).
  • Openfire, Matrix, or other message-based collaboration platforms.
  • HAProxy, F5 BIG-IP, or similar reverse proxy and application delivery technologies.
  • Identity federation technologies (SAML, OAuth2, OpenID Connect, ADFS).
  • Docker, Kubernetes, and container technologies.
  • Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Infrastructure monitoring and logging platforms.
  • Git, DevOps, and CI/CD workflows.

Education

College diploma or university degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
